Vatopedi’s bell tower (ca. 1427) is the oldest on Mt. Athos. The monk in this photograph interrupts the usual stillness of the monastery and fills its sacred space with the sounds of the tower’s eight bells, calling monks and pilgrims to prayer on a major feast day. The barely-visible inscription high on the tower’s façade gives reason for the age-old tradition: “The bells above pealing joyously call the faithful unto praise of God...″
