Monk beating Talanton (Semantron), Xenophontos
This monk loudly raps a wooden plank called the talanton (or semantron) with a mallet. Its sound is a call to communal prayer for all of the monks and visitors at the monastery. Tapping on the talanton audibly represents Noah building the Ark, and such an allegory is particularly appropriate because the church where the monks gather for prayer symbolically represents the ark of salvation.
