Dionysiou, Entrance, digital print from 35mm slide, 1983

A monk enters the monastery of Dionysiou through its cavernous portal. This entryway accentuates the mass of the structure above and the thickness of the walls surrounding the monastery. Open during daylight hours, the portal is one of the only points of access between the enclosure and the outside world. For the monks, the restrictive access is indicative of their lifestyle and the very limited communication they maintain with the world outside monastery walls.
