Frescoes of Apocalypse in vestibule of trapeza, Dionysiou, digital print from 35mm slide, 1983

Depicted here are scenes from the Book of Revelation: the opening of the fifth and sixth seals (left and center) and four angels holding back the winds (right). These scenes of the Apocalypse are located in the refectory because passages from the Book of Revelation would be read during meals – not part of the church services. Painted at the end of the sixteenth century, these scenes were modeled after prints by Albrecht Dürer and by other engravers from Northern Europe.
