Brother Kassianos of Pantokrator: The Prophet Elijah Fed by the Raven
Prophet Elijah is approached by a raven offering him bread. The prophet is depicted as an ascetic in humble clothing, particularly the cloak made of coarse hair. Having lived a large part of his life secluded in the desert, he represents a biblical prefiguration of asceticism. The raven sent by God to provide Elijah with sustenance embodies the belief that God will provide necessities to those who wholly devote themselves to Him. The life-sustaining bread is thus a metaphor of the Eucharist.
