Waiting for Resurrection: Skulls in the Charnel House at Prodromos
A row of skulls stacked neatly together await the afterlife in the Charnel House of the cenobitic Podromos Skete. Cenobitic monasticism stresses community over individual identity not only in life, but also in death. Worms consume the flesh of deceased monks in the grave, and the bones are moved to the Charnel House. Skeletal remains are preserved in anticipation of resurrection, where their fragmented bodies will be reordered.
